คำว่า “THE TRAINED MAN WINS” เกิดจากแนวคิดของ อาจารย์ประภา ประจักษ์ศุภนิติ ซึ่งดำรงตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการวิทยาลัยเทคนิค ธนบุรี ท่านได้อ่านข้อความภาษาอังกฤษเกี่ยวกับอาชีวศึกษาและพบประโยคที่มีความหมายกระชับและสอดคล้องกับแนวคิดการฝึกฝนในสายอาชีพ จึงได้นำประโยคนั้นมาทอดเป็นภาษาไทย

18 ตุลาคม 2527 อาจารย์ประภา ประจักษ์ศุภนิติ รับพระราชทานปริญญาครุศาสตร์อุตสาหกรรมบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์

ต่อมา อาจารย์ประภาได้ไปนมัสการพระคุณเจ้าซึ่งเคยเป็นกรรมวาจาจารย์ที่วัดบรมนิวาสราชวรวิหาร เพื่อขอให้ช่วยค้นหาคำในภาษาบาลีที่มีความหมายเหมือนกัน พระคุณเจ้าจึงได้ค้นคว้าและพบภาษิตบาลีที่ว่า “ทนฺโต เสฎฺโฐ มนุสฺเสสุ” ซึ่งแปลว่า “ในหมู่มนุษย์ ผู้ฝึกตนแล้วเป็นผู้ประเสริฐสุด” โดยมีการนำคำภาษาบาลีมาใช้ในตราของวิทยาลัยเทคนิค ธนบุรี

        คำบาลีนี้ถูกนำมาใช้เป็นคติพจน์ของมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าธนบุรี (มจธ.) โดยเฉพาะภาควิชาวิศวกรรมเครื่องกล เพราะสะท้อนปรัชญาและเป้าหมายสำคัญที่เน้นการ ‘ฝึกฝน’ และ ‘พัฒนาตนเอง’ อย่างต่อเนื่องในหมู่มนุษย์ โดยเฉพาะในบริบทการเรียนการสอนด้านวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี ที่ต้องอาศัยการฝึกฝนทักษะ ความรู้ และคุณธรรมควบคู่กันไป

    อาจารย์ประภา ประจักษ์ศุภนิติ ถึงแก่อนิจกรรมเมื่อวันที่ 22 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2543 สิริรวมอายุ 84 ปี การจากไปของท่านถือเป็นความสูญเสียครั้งสำคัญ หนังสือเล่มนี้จัดพิมพ์ขึ้นเพื่อรำลึกถึงท่าน โดยถ่ายทอดแนวคิดและหลักการบริหารงานของอาจารย์ที่ไม่ใช้การตำหนิโดยตรง แต่เลือกเขียน "โน้ต" สั้น ๆ ที่เปี่ยมด้วย คติสอนใจ แสดงถึงความเมตตาและความปรารถนาดี ท่านเปรียบทุกคนรอบตัวเสมือนคนในครอบครัว คอยตักเตือนเมื่อทำผิดพลาดและพร้อมที่จะให้กำลังใจเมื่อเหนื่อยล้า (หนังสือ 104 ปี อาจารย์ประภา ประจักษ์ศุภนิติ)

The phrase "THE TRAINED MAN WINS" originated from the concept of Ajarn Prapa Prajaksupiniti, who served as the director of Thonburi Technical College. He read an English text about vocational education and found a concise sentence that aligned with the concept of professional training, so he translated that sentence into Thai.

October 18, 1984, Ajarn Prapha Prajaksuphanit received an honorary Bachelor of Industrial Education degree.

Later, Ajarn Prapa went to pay respects to the venerable monk who had been her Kammavācācariya at Wat Boromniwat Ratchaworawihan, asking for help to find a Pali word with the same meaning. The venerable monk then researched and found the Pali proverb "Danto Settho Manussesu," which translates to "Among humans, the self-disciplined are the most excellent." This Pali phrase was subsequently used in the emblem of Thonburi Technical College.

     This Pali phrase is used as the motto of King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), especially the Department of Mechanical Engineering, because it reflects the philosophy and important goal of emphasizing continuous 'training' and 'self-development' among humans, especially in the context of teaching and learning in science and technology, which requires the cultivation of skills, knowledge, and virtues simultaneously.
